Laser welding carbon steel and ordinary alloy steel In general, carbon steel laser welding effect is good, its welding quality depends on the content of impurities like other welding processes, sulfur and phosphorus are sensitive factors that lead to welding cracks.

In order to obtain satisfactory welding quality, preheating is required when the carbon content exceeds 0.25%. When steel with different carbon content is welded to each other, the welding torch can be slightly tilted to the side of the low-carbon material to ensure the quality of the joint. Low carbon boiling steel is not suitable for laser welding because of its high sulfur and phosphorus content. Low carbon killed steel has low impurity content and good welding effect. Medium carbon steel, high carbon steel and ordinary alloy steel can be well laser welding, but it needs to be preheated and post-welding treatment to eliminate stress and avoid crack formation.

Stainless steel welding in general, it is easier to obtain high-quality joints than traditional welding. Due to the fast welding speed and small heat-affected zone, sensitization is not an important issue. Compared with carbon steel, the low thermal conductivity of stainless steel makes it easier to obtain a deep weld.

Practice has proved that laser deep penetration welding can be successfully applied to the following metals: stainless steel ~ low carbon steel, 416 stainless steel ~310 stainless steel, 347 stainless steel ~HASTALY nickel alloy, nickel electrode ~ cold forged steel, bimetallic strips with different nickel content.
